Comic Book Artist Spotlight: Jack Kirby
Veteran Comic Con is proud to salute Veteran comic book artists. Today, we feature the late, great Jack Kirby.
Jack Kirby is widely known for his contribution to comic book characters from Captain America to the Black Panther. But did you know that Jack Kirby also served in the military?
Jack Kirby served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
“Kirby was drafted into the U.S. Army on June 7, 1943. He landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy on August 23, 1944, two-and-a-half months after D-Day. Kirby recalled that a lieutenant, learning that comics artist Kirby was in his command, made him a scout who would advance into towns and draw reconnaissance maps and pictures, an extremely dangerous duty,” according to his bio on Wikipedia.
Amazing right? It’s no wonder Jack Kirby was responsible for the creation of so many heroes – he was a hero himself!
Jack Kirby was a comic book legend.
Jack Kirby would go on to partner with Stan Lee (whom also proudly served his country in World War II). Lee and Kirby’s work would include iconic characters like Thor, Doctor Doom, Magneto, Captain America, Black Panther, and so many more.
Jack Kirby even worked with DC Comics both early and late in his career. One of his greatest creations with DC was the “New Gods” series, which is currently planned as a feature film.
